Re: Robert Palmer (USA) - Deep Blues: A Musical and Cultural History of the Mississippi Delta (1981)

Post by VacantJoy »

Blues is the cornerstone of American popular music, the bedrock of rock and roll. In this extraordinary musical and social history, Robert Palmer traces the odyssey of the blues from its rural beginnings, to the steamy bars of Chicago's South Side, to international popularity, recognition, and imitation.

Palmer tells the story of the blues through the lives of its greatest practitioners: Robert Johnson, who sang of being pursued by the hounds of hell; Muddy Waters, who electrified Delta blues and gave the music its rock beat; Robert Lockwood and Sonny Boy Williamson, who launched the King Biscuit Time radio show and brought blues to the airwaves; and John Lee Hooker, Ike Turner, B. B. King, and many others.

""How Long – How Long" is a blues band staple even today, and the first recorded collaboration between Muddy Waters and Little Walter, in 1948, produced "I Want My Baby", one of countless "Tight Like That" derivatives."

This one's a bit weird: "I Want My Baby" was written / copied by Little Walter, but the Tempo-Tone B-side was credited to Sunnyland Slim and Muddy Waters (spelled as "Sunny Land Slim" and "Muddy Water", respectively).

Page 181
"That's All Right" by Robert Lockwood.

It's universally acknowledged that this blues standard is "Robert's song", as Muddy Waters puts it – but he apparently never recorded it. The version that made "Robert's song" as such a commercial hit is universally understood to be That's All Right / Ludella by Jimmy Rogers. Rogers of course claims it to be his own construction – and during the shift from blues as pure folk tradition to 1950s mass distribution through records, who could really argue with that?

There's got to be something wrong with this, meaning, there must be a Lockwood-version. Let me know, I didn't spend too much time on this for now.
